Two Chicago firefighters were rescued after issuing a mayday when they ran low on air while searching a burning two-story apartment building Sunday.
Crews responded to the blaze at about 11 p.m. in a building in the city's Ravenswood neighborhood, WBBM-TV reports. The mayday was sent after the firefighters' tanks began running out of air, and they couldn't find an exit because of poor visibility inside the building.
The firefighters eventually were found and escaped the building safely. They were taken to a local hospital, where they were in good condition.
"I’ve got members over at the hospital right now with (the firefighters)," Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner Barry Garr told WBBM. "Right now the doctors are evaluating them. They’re just making sure they’re okay."
All of the building's residents were able to escape, and no one else was injured. One woman was stopped by firefighters from going back inside to find her six cats, but no animals were found in the building.
